Gmail team has announced the new feature that lets you attach files while sending mails even when you are offline (via Offline Gmail).

“Starting today, attachments work just the way you would expect them to whether you are online or offline.Just add the attachment and send your message.”

How to Hide Inactive Icons in Windows Taskbar

Mr Ashok, one of our esteemed reader had posted a query in Ask Techrena section of our blog. His query was:

sir,
there is a problem in my laptop. is it does not hide the inactive icon. i can use the control panel and go to task bar option and apply the hide inactive icon but window does not hide the icon's. my laptop configuration is:
2GB ram
160 hard disk
processor core 2 duo
window XP

The inactive icon tray may not show up sometimes in spite of enabling hiding from the taskbar properties. If such a problem occurs then we have to enable it from he windows registry. A registry named EnableAutoTray is to be created and set the value.

Solve Turn off Button Missing in Welcome Screen in Windows XP, Vista and 7

A common problem for most of the Windows XP home edition users is that Turn off Button is missing from their welcome screen or their log on page. Most of us do not notice this problem as we do not care about it. But speaking the truth Turn off button is really necessary in the log on screen as we should be able to shut down the computer without knowing the password. Otherwise you will not be able to shutdown the computer safely without knowing the password. This problem of missing shutdown button from the welcome screen or the log on page may be a result of some registry change by some of the software you install. But this problem has a very simple solution. You just need to change a registry value.

In Windows XP Home Edition or Vista Basic unlike the professional or ultimate editions which doesn’t support gpedit.msc or secpol.msc this problem can be solved by using only the registry.

I am presenting two methods here. Both the methods need your registry registry to be enabled. While performing the steps if you get an error message like Registry Editor has been disabled by your Administrator" then you have to enable the regedit command. To enable registry editor Click here.

Method 1: By using Command Prompt

Step 1: Open a command prompt (Press Start+R, Type cmd and Enter)

Step 2: Copy the command below and paste it in the command prompt. Note that for pasting in command prompt right click in the black screen and select paste.

REG ADD HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v ShutdownWithoutLogon /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

Step 3: After executing the command Press Start+L and see if you can see the Turn off button. If yes ok, else restart.

Method 2: By using Registry Editor

Step 1: Open a command prompt (Press Start+R, Type regedit and Enter)

Step 2: In the Left side of the Registry Editor Navigate to the key given below:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

It is shown in the image below:

Step 3: In the right side find the key ShutdownWithoutLogon. Double click on it and change the value to 1.

Note: If you are not able to find the key then you have to create it. Right click on the right side and select new DWORD 32 bit. Keep the Name as ShutdownWithoutLogon and set the value as 1.

Step 4: Now press Start+L and see if you can see the start button. If not Restart.

Important:

1. If your turn off button goes missing again after some time then some process is changing the value. You need to repeat the steps again.

2. If you cannot find the root key System under Policies then create a key with the same name in the left side pane of the registry editor and continue.

Ophcrack USB Booting Windows Password Recovery for Windows XP or Vista

We have already seen using Ophcrack Live CD for Cracking Windows XP and Windows Vista Passwords. The thing is that now a days we do not use CDs anymore, we use USB drives for our day to day activities. Now what if you want to run Ophcrack from your USB drive instead of wasting money on a CD or if your CD ROM Drive is not working? Moreover using USB drives are more convenient and common these days. Here I have an Ideal solution for this question. But if you are not interested in recovering the password or you simply want to reset or delete the password then there is much easier technique which requires only a 3 MB file instead of Ophcrack. Just see how to Reset windows Password Using a USB drive or a CD

In this method we will be using a program called 7-ZIP for extracting the ISO file and some batch files for making the drives bootable.

USB Requirement:

Minimum 512 MB for Windows XP
Minimum 1 GB for Windows Vista Or Windows 7 Beta
Format: FAT32

I have tried this method in Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 Beta and it works perfectly fine. Follow the steps below:

Step 1: Download the ISO File For Ophcrack Live CD 2.1.0 From the links below: (Choose according to your operating system). If you have already downloaded skip this step.

Windows XP:

Size: 452 MB

http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ophcrack/ophcrack-xp-livecd-2.1.0.iso

Windows Vista or 7:

Size: 532 MB

http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ophcrack/ophcrack-vista-livecd-2.1.0.iso

Step 2: Download the ZIP File For making USB boot version of Ophcrack Live CD From the link below:

Size: 414 KB

Step 3: Extract the usbboot.zip file at any location of your computer, not in the USB drive.

Step 4: Copy the Ophcrack Live CD ISO file to the usbboot folder. Double Click the USBOphcrack.bat (ExtractophIso.bat) file.

Step 5: Type the letter of your USB drive and press Enter (The USB Drive should be Formatted with FAT32 File system before starting the process). Here in my case the Drive letter is ‘h’.

Step 6: Wait for the Extraction process to complete. Follow the on Screen Instructions given by the command prompt as shown below.

Step 7: Now restart the System. You need to set the boot order to Boot from USB Drive as the first option if you have not set USB Drive as the first option. To do this you need to go to bios setup and change the order. For most of the systems the keys like DELETE, F10, F2, F12 etc are used for going to the Bios setup. But here I have used the Boot Menu Key which will show the available boot options during start up. For my System(HP) the boot menu key is Esc. For Compaq Systems it is usually F9. So if you know the Boot menu key then no need to change the order. Just Select USB Drive from the menu.

Step 8: Now after the boot from USB Drive you can follow the Steps 4 to Step 7 given in the previous post:

What will you do if you forget your Windows XP or Vista Password? The very first thing you should try is to go to safe mode and check whether you have set your administrator password. But if the administrator password is also set then you may be thinking the only way is to format the computer and install fresh Windows XP or Vista. Well, here I am going to suggest a method here that will simply recover your lost passwords, both administrator and user in few seconds or at most some minutes without installing any software or without breaking your head. But if you are not interested in recovering the password or you simply want to reset or delete the password then there is much easier technique which requires only a 3 MB file instead of Ophcrack. Just see how to Reset windows Password Using a USB drive or a CD

Here, We will be using a software called Ophcrack which is an open source (GPL licensed) program that cracks Windows passwords by using LM hashes through rainbow tables. But you may be thinking whether it is a legal one. Yes it is completely legal according to Wikipedia. But you should not use this software for illegal purposes like unauthorized access to other’s system. I have tried this method in Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 Beta and it works perfectly fine for an alphanumeric password length up to 14.

The method is a very simple one. You just need to download the software which is 452MB for XP and 532MB for Vista or Windows 7. Ophcrack comes in bootable Live CD 2.1.0 ISO and installation files. Here we will be using the Live CD method where no installation is required. Follow the steps below:

Step 1: Download the ISO File For Ophcrack Live CD 2.1.0 From the links below: (Choose according to your operating system)

Windows XP:

Size: 452 MB

Windows Vista or 7:

Size: 532 MB

Step 2: After the download is completed successfully burn the ISO file to a CD using a burning software. ISO files can be directly burnt (Just open with burners like Nero etc.). You should not use data mode or any other mode to burn. The CD is a bootable one. But if you do not want to use a CD, you can very well use a USB Flash Drive to run the program. Click here To see the USB Boot Technique.

Step 3: Insert the CD to your CD/DVD drive. Restart the System. You need to set the boot order to Boot from CD as the first option if you have not set CD drive as the first option. To do this you need to go to bios setup and change the order. For most of the systems the keys like DELETE, F10, F2, F12 etc are used for going to the Bios setup. But here I have used the Boot Menu Key which will show the available boot options during start up. For my System(HP) the boot menu key is Esc. For Compaq Systems it is usually F9. So if you know the Boot menu key then no need to change the order. Just Select CD/DVD ROM from the menu.

Step 4: After booting from the Live CD, wait for it to load and select Ophcrack VESA mode(Recommended). If you have a graphics card you can try Graphics Mode.

Step 5: If you have more than one partition containing the password hashes it will ask you to select one. But most of the computers will have only one hash partition, so you may not see this step. Select any partition and try if it asks you as shown below.

Step 6: Wait for Ophcrack to run and find your password. After getting the password you need,you can simply click exit even if the progress is not 100%. No need to wait till end.

Here I had set the password as techrena. It took around 1 min 20 sec to find this password.

Step 7: After the process it will ask you to press any key to exit Ophcrack. Then Type ‘y’ to shutdown the System.

Now start your system. Enter the password you have found. And that’s it, see how simple it is!

A Tutorial on how to hide drives in my computer for windows systems

Hiding a folder or a file is a normal day to day process. But what do we do if you want to hide a drive or a partition. Sometimes we may want to hide a disk drive or a partition for our privacy. This question has been a problem with me till now. I have found out that it is a very easy process which needs to create a simple registry. We should note that the method i am going to give here does not delete any of your disk drives, data, and we can find the drives in the disk management. We can access the hidden drives from the address bar e.g. type D: in the address bar and enter to explorer D drive etc.

Show All Drives: Value = 0

How It works:

A drive is assigned a value according to the drive letter. For example value for “A” drive is 2^0 (Two to the power zero) i.e. 1, “B” Drive is 2^1 i.e. 2 and it goes on. Now if you want to hide D drive and E drive we have to give the value as (8+16) i.e. 24 in the command i have given below. Windows recognizes the values and hides your D and E drive. If you want to show all the drives give the value 0. Its simple.

Here I have given the simplest solution. Just follow the simple steps below:

Step 1: Press Start + R and type cmd. Click OK. It opens a command prompt.

Step 2: Copy the COMMAND code given in the table below:

REG ADD HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer /v NoDrives /t REG_DWORD /d 24 /f

Step 3: Paste the code in the command prompt. In order to paste it, right click on the command prompt and select paste. Change the value according to the drives you want to hide and press enter. [Here the value i have given is “24” for hiding D and E drives(8+16), refer the table above for your values]

Step 4: The code will be executed as shown. Now Log Off your system and Log On (or simply restart).

Note: 1. The value 24 is highlighted because this is the value you need to change according to your drives you need to hide.

Note: 2. If you get any error messages like “Registry editor has been disabled by your administrator” then you need to enable your registry editor. To enable your registry editor Visit the link given below:

After restarting or logging on you will find that the selected drives are not present. In order to show all your hidden drives give the value as 0. If you find any problem ask us here.

“Check stopped - earnings credited back” seen in your Adsense Payment History?

Some Adsense publishers who were expecting their February 2009 Adsense Earnings check from Google may have observed this message “Check stopped - earnings credited back” message in their Payments History tab[Even though there were no visible holds on the account].I was searching for an official word from Google about this and finally I could get one.

AdSensePro William,a Google Employee from Google Hyderabad has addressed this issue in one of the posts in Adsense Help Forum

This is due to a bug in Adsense payment hold system.

He says

“If you were one of the publishers who ended up with your AdSense account on hold for payments due to an AdSense bug, you were reassured that payments would be processed to be included at the end of February. Originally, the payments were to be included in the payments at the end of February. However, because Google had to remove these holds manually, it seems as though this wasn’t done until after the February 15th cut off time. So what does this mean for affected publishers? You have to wait another month to receive your payment due to Google’s bug, according to AdSensePro Jen.”

So affected publishers can expect their earnings to be included in next payment cycle[If you get this message “Check stopped - earnings credited back” before March 15th in your account or if you get it after March 15, you can expect your earnings to be included in next month’s payment cycle].

Solve Windows cannot find explorer.exe startup problem

“Windows cannot find explorer.exe”. You may be familiar with this problem showing error messages on start up. This problem is quite similar to the problem like Windows cannot find regsvr.exe. Normally explorer.exe is a windows file which is to be executed during startup. This is an essential process without which we cannot explore any windows system. But after a virus attack, the virus may change some registry values to run an image of explorer.exe which may be a virus. After the removal of the virus by your anti virus, windows cannot find the image process during startup and shows the error message as shown below.

Here I have given the simplest solution which even a naive can do it. Just follow the simple steps below:

Step 1: Press Start + R and type cmd. Click OK. It opens a command prompt.

Step 2: Copy the code given in the table below:

reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options" /v explorer.exe /f

reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options" /v iexplorer.exe /f

Step 3: Paste the code in the command prompt. In order to paste it, right click on the command prompt and select paste.

Step 4: The code will be executed as shown. Now restart the system.

After restarting you will find that there is no error message. If you find any problem ask us here.

N.B.:

1. If you find any error like: “The system was unable to find the specific key value or key”, just ignore it. It is because the iexplore.exe key may not be present.

2. If you find any error like: “Registry Editor has been disabled by your administrator” then the virus has blocked your regedit function. You can enable it in easy steps given in the link below:

3. If you want to execute the two keys seperately, you can execute them by copying them and pasting it in the cmd individually. An example is given below:

Remove Windows cannot find regsvr.exe message at startup

If your system was infected by the regsvr.exe or commonly known as newfolder.exe virus and if you have successfully removed the virus from your system, but still you may be getting this annoying error message during startup telling “Windows cannot find regsvr.exe” as shown below. You may face similar problems like “Windows cannot find explorer.exe” etc. This is because the virus had assigned a registry value to execute itself during the startup. As you have removed the virus, the system can no longer find this virus file and hence the error message.

This problem has a very easy solution. Just follow the steps below:

Step 1: Press Start+R and type regedit. It will open registry editor. But if you get an error like Registry editor has been disabled by the administrator then you need to enable the registry editor. To enable registry editor click: How to enable Registry Editor (REGEDIT).

Step 2: Now after opening the registry editor, follow the registry path as follows:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

This path is also shown in the images below:

Step 3: After opening Winlogon look for Shell in the right pane of the registry editor as shown.

Step 4: Double Click the Shell registry value. You can find “Explorer.exe regsvr.exe” in the Value data field.

Step 5: Delete regsvr.exe alone and click OK.

Step 6: Now the registry has been changed. Closed all programs and restart.

After restart you can find that the message is no longer shown.

N.B.: Make sure that you don’t delete Explorer.exe from the Shell registry.

In order to enable the subtitle feature in media player we need to rename a system file called mfpmp.exe. The file is Present in C:\Windows\System32. We come through a lot of problems in installing our own Operating Systems in our laptops, like "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer", etc. Here I have given a solution that will definitely solve these problems. Here we create our own Windows installation CD/DVD which will include all the drivers, etc. we want like the SATA driver. We have already seen one solution to this problem which uses the BIOS facility to activate the installation. The solution was a simple one but it is not ideal for some laptops.

We have to use software known as nLite to perform the driver integration operation. To download the software click here. For Downloading Intel SATA AHCI Drivers for Windows XP Click here. After successfully installing the software(nLite) follow the steps given below:

Step 1: Copy your Windows installation disc into some folder in your hard drive. Here I named my folder as WINXP.

Step 2: Open nLite. Click Next.

Step 3: Now Click Browse. Select the folder where you have copied your Windows installation Disc. Click OK.

Step 4: It will show the details of your installation. Click Next.

Step 5: As we don't have any Presets click next.

Step 6: Here it will show the activities you want to perform. Select Drivers in Integrate section and Bootable ISO in Create section. Click Next.

Step 7: Now click insert and select multiple driver option.

Step 8: You can browse and select the driver folder you want to integrate. Select All and OK.

Step 9: It will show you the details of the driver. Select All and Click Ok. After that cllick next. It will ask for confirmation. Click Yes.

Step 10: After it completes the integration process click next.

Step 11: Now you can burn your disc. Select direct burn.

Step 12: Click Burn. Confirm Yes.

tep 13: Wait until it finishes. Click Finish.

Now you have successfully completed integrating the driver. You can use this CD for installation in any laptop where the SATA native is not supported.

You can use nLite for any purpose like integrating components, etc.

A wireless router affords laptop or portable computer users greater mobility in their homes and businesses. In most home networks, wireless routers are connected to a cable or DSL modem, and the router sends the signals and information that make up an Internet protocol (IP) thread to the user's computer via radio signals rather than wires.

To communicate with the wireless router, individual computers house transceivers such as an internal expansion card, a peripheral docked by USB or, in the case of laptops, a PC card or hard-wired internal device. For those accessing the Internet through a high-speed connection, a wireless router can also serve as a hardware firewall (as opposed to a software program), enabling protection from undesirable outside computers without exhausting as many system resources as traditional firewall programs.

Installing a Wireless Router

First, turn off the PC and modem, then remove the Ethernet cable from the PC and plug it into the router's WAN port. Install a second Ethernet cable between the PC's Ethernet port and one of the router's Ethernet ports. Power the modem, router and then PC, waiting for the system to boot and initialize before attempting an Internet connection.
Most routers are programmed with the manufacturer's default settings, including the network's name or service set identifier (SSID), channel and sign-on password. These default settings generally may be changed using included software or an online setup utility provided by the router's manufacturer.
Configure the router by entering the router configuration IP address at the URL provided, followed by the configuration utility ID and the default password. To find your router's default IP address and the default login info, refer to the owner's manual. If you own a Linksys router, a popular brand, the IP address is usually 192.168.1.1. Two other popular brands, D-Link and Netgear, generally use 192.168.0.1.

Connecting a Printer to a Wireless Router

First, check the documentation that came with your printer to determine how it's designed to connect to computers. Connections made through Ethernet, USB and (obsolescent) parallel ports are common, but newer printers are sometimes wireless-enabled and allow you to simply add them to your wireless network.
Refer to the owner's manual for your particular wireless router. Inside, find the default IP address and the default login info. If you own a Linksys router, the IP address is usually 192.168.1.1. Other popular brands D-Link and Netgear generally use 192.168.0.1.

Connecting Two Wireless Routers

Bridging two wireless routers involves configuring both networks manually. Visit each network location - which should be recognized by your computer automatically - and configure the appropriate Service Set Identifier (SSID), Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) or WiFi Protected Access (WPA) key and authentication information. Make sure you know the SSID and WEP or WPA key ahead of time.

Connecting an Xbox 360 to a Wireless Router

Connecting an Xbox 360 to a wireless router allows you to use Xbox Live without physically connecting your Xbox to a cable. Power up your Xbox system and the router, then plug the wireless networking adapter into the two slots at the Xbox's rear. Unplug any existing Ethernet cables and connect the USB connector to the port adjacent to the adapter. Use the system area of the Xbox dashboard to adjust your network settings. This should connect you to the wireless network.

Youtube honors ChangeDotGov with iPod-ready downloadable videos.

This may not be a much awaited feature[since there a quite a large number of external Youtube video downloaders available] but a significant change for sure.Yeah we are talking about Youtube video download feature.Youtube has rolled out this feature from Jan 18th,2009 and US President’s official channel ChangeDotGov becomes the first channel to get a ‘Download’ link included at the bottom of the video.

You can see the download button download the video in mp4 format playable in iPods[marked in red].At present this download option is available only to some selected videos but we soon may see this feature being extended to all videos.

Enable Hibernation on your computer

Hibernation,a handy alternative for regular ‘Turn-off’ or ‘Stand-by’ options.Hibernation saves the current state of your computer to a hard disk file,when you turn on your machine again,it starts from where you have left off.That means you can go ahead with work that you were doing like you can continue with the Document/Spread sheet that you were preparing or you can continue with the blog post that you have left in the middle or anything.One thing that you have to compromise is that Enabling this option means virtually losing the Disk space equivalent to your RAM’s size.For instance if your Physical RAM is 512 MB one then you have to allocate 503 MB for hibernation file[Hiberfil.sys-hidden system file].

Let’s see how can Hibernation be enabled[Only for Windows XP or later versions]

Go to Control Panel first.
Switch to ‘Classic View’
Find ‘Power Options’ in the list.

Go to ‘Hibernate’ tab in the Power Options

Check on the ‘Enable hibernation’ option.

You are done,Now that you have enabled Hibernation on your machine,you need to Press ‘H’ when Turn off/Log off Screen appears.[Key ‘U’ is used for regular Turn off and H for Hibernation].

Here is a simple solution for those who want to disable the error reporting option. You just have to follow the simple steps below:

Step1: Go to Start and then open control panel.

Step2: In the control panel open System. This appears only in the classic view. If you are in category view go to Performance and Maintenance. You will find System there.

Step3: In the System window go to advanced tab. There click Error Reporting.

Step4: Select Disable error reporting option. Click OK.

Now you will not get any error reporting messages. But if you update your windows it may automatically enable the error reporting. So you have to disable it if it comes again.

How to enable Task Manager in Windows XP

It is a common thing that virus attack will corrupt your registry and your task manager will be disabled. The main reason why viruses always target this action is to prevent the user from ending the virus processes. Here, I have a very simple solution for this problem. But in order to solve this problem make sure that your Registry Editor (REGEDIT) is enabled. In order to open your Task Manager press "Ctrl + Alt + Delete". If your task manager opens then there is no problem, otherwise it will show a message as shown below.

Step 1: Go to start and click run OR Press “Start + R”. Type regedit and press enter.

Step 2: Now you will see the Registry Editor. Double click HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Under this you will find SOFTWARE. Again Double Click it. The Path is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE

Step 3: Under SOFTWARE you will find Microsoft. You follow the path as HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft

Step 4: Again under Microsoft section you will find Windows. You have to follow the path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System. See in the right hand side. You can see a registry named DisableTaskMgr. Double click on the registry and make the value as 0.

After completing the whole process go to run, type taskmgr and press enter OR Press "Ctrl + Alt + Delete". Now you will have access to your Task Manager. If you have any doubts please let us know.

How to Show Hidden Files and Folders in Virus Affected Systems

It is a very annoying that even a nonsense virus attack will corrupt your registry and your hidden folders and files cannot be seen. The main reason why viruses always target this action is that the virus files, mostly .exe are in hidden mode. If the user cannot see the hidden files then it is not easy for them to delete or detect these virus files. Here, I have given a very simple solution for this problem. But in order to solve this problem make sure that your Registry Editor (REGEDIT) is enabled.

Step 1: Go to start and click run OR Press “Start + R”. Type regedit and press enter.

Step 2: Now you will see the Registry Editor. Double click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Under this you will find SOFTWARE. Again Double Click it. The Path is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE

Step 3: Under SOFTWARE you will find Microsoft. You follow the path as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\Advanced\Folder

Step 4: Again under Folder section you will find Hidden. In Hidden section click on NOHIDDEN. See in the right hand side. You can see two registry values CheckedValue and DefaultValue. Make sure that both of them have the values as 2. Till now you have followed the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\NOHIDDEN

Step 5: If you find that the values are wrong. For example if the value of CheckedValue is 1 then double click on it. It will show a window where you can edit the value as 2. Press enter.

Step 6: Now under the Hidden Section Go to SHOWALL. See in the right hand side. You can again see two registry values CheckedValue and DefaultValue. Make sure that CheckedValue has the value 1 and DefaultValue has the value 2.

Now go to folder options and set the option as Show hidden files and folders. You can see the hidden files and folders.

If you are not able to see the hidden files, you have to repeat the entire process after ending the explorer.exe process from task manager.

After completing the whole process go to run, type explorer and press enter. Now you will have access to your hidden folders and files. If you have any doubts please don't hesitate.

How to enable Registry Editor (REGEDIT)

As you might have seen, whenever you face a virus attack the first thing it does is to disable the registry editor, task manager, folder options etc. In order to enable the last two you need to enable the registry editor first. Here I have given a simple solution for enabling the registry editor such that even a naïve will be able follow.

To open your Registry Editor press “Start Button + R” or go to Start menu and click RUN. Then type regedit in the run command and press Enter. If your Registry Editor opens then it has not been disabled.

Here is how it looks like when your Registry Editor has been disabled.

Follow the steps given below to enable your Registry Editor:

Step 1: Open notepad or any other text editor. Copy and paste the following code in the box to the notepad or you can download the regedit enabler file from the link below:

Step 2: Now to save the file press “CTRL + S”. It will show a window for selecting the location and format of the file you want to save. In the “Save As Type:” List select All Files. Step 3: Now go to the location where you have saved the file. Open the file. In my example I have saved the file in my desktop.

Step 4: You will get a message box telling your Registry Editor has been enabled. Click OK.

Now you must have access to your registry editor. Go to RUN and type regedit.

After opening your Registry Editor you can now enable your Task Manager, Folder options etc. If you have any sort of problem please notify us.

How to Share Internet Connection in Windows XP

Internet connection sharing (ICS) is a very useful technique for connecting more than one computer to the internet using only one internet connection. For example, if you have a broadband connection and if you have another computer then you can connect this computer to the internet without another broadband connection through ICS. But Internet connection sharing is possible only in computers running with WINDOWS XP or VISTA.

This is a simple process. The steps of INTERNET CONNECTION SHARING is described as follows:

CONFIGURING THE HOST COMPUTER:

The computer which is having an internet connection should be made the ICS host computer. And other computers on the network connect to the Internet through this computer.

To use Internet Connection Sharing to share your Internet connection, the host computer must have one network adapter that is configured to connect to the internal network, and one network adapter or modem that is configured to connect to the Internet.

On the host computer, follow these steps to share the Internet connection:

Step 1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

Step 2. Click Network Connections in Control Panel.

Step 3. Right-click the connection that you use to connect to the Internet. For example, if you connect to the Internet by using a modem, right-click the connection that you want under Dial-up.

Step 4. Click Properties and select the Advanced tab. Under "Internet Connection Sharing", select the "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" check box. If you are sharing a dial-up Internet connection, select the Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet check box if you want to permit your computer to automatically connect to the Internet.

Step 5. Click OK. You will receive the following message:

"When Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, your LAN adapter will be set to use IP
address 192.168.0.1. Your computer may lose connectivity with other computers on
your network. If these other computers have static IP addresses, it is a good idea to set them
to obtain their IP addresses automatically. Are you sure you want to enable Internet
Connection Sharing?"

Step 6. Click Yes.
The connection to the Internet is shared to other computers on the local area network (LAN). The network adapter that is connected to the LAN is configured with a static IP address of 192.168.0.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 as follows:

Step 7: In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, click OK.

Now you have configured the host computer. You can proceed configuring the client computers.

CONFIGURING THE CLIENT COMPUTER(S):

To connect to the Internet by using the shared connection, you must confirm the LAN adapter IP configuration in the client computer. To confirm the LAN adapter IP follow configuration, follow these steps: (Follow Step 1 to 3 as told earlier)

Step 1: Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

Step 2: Click Network Connections.

Step 3: Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.

Step 4: Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the "This connection uses the following items" list, and then click Properties.

Step 5: In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box, click Obtain an IP address automatically (if it is not already selected), and then click OK. Or you can also assign a unique static IP address in the range of 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254. For example, you can assign the following static IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. provide DNS server if needed.

Step 6: In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, click OK.

You have successfully completed Internet Connection Sharing. Make sure that all the clients are connected to the host computer. Please take a look at the notes below if you face any trouble.

Note:

You must be logged on to the computers as an administrator to complete the above procedure.
If your ICS host computer has an external DSL or Cable modem, then you need to install two LAN adapters in the host. One connects to the internet through the external modem and the other one connects to the client computers.
If you want to connect more than one computer to the ICS host for internet then you need to buy a network hub that will connect the rest of the computer to the host.
If you don’t want to buy a hub but you want to connect more than one computer to the host then you need to install more network adapters on the host computer and make a network bridge of the connections. You must bridge only the connections which connects to your clients.
If any DNS server address is given by your ISP, you must assign it to the LAN adapter of the host as well as the clients.
The process is almost same for Windows Vista also if you want to try.

To Remove ‘Your Computer Might Be At Risk’ Message from your computer tray

Continuing our HOW TO series,we’ll look at how to remove ‘Your Computer Might Be At Risk’ alerts coming up in the tray icon on Windows XP based PCs.

If you disable/turn off the default ‘Windows Firewall’ or if you turn off Automatic Updates(Not Recommended) or if you don’t have any updated anti-virus program running on your Windows XP based computer,you would see some annoying message/alert coming at the tray icon of your PC.

Message would look like this:

“Your Computer Might be at risk”

Windows Firewall is Turned off

Automatic updates Disabled

Your Anti-Virus might be out of date.

It is actually intended to alert the user,however many PC users find it annoying.

So follow the below points to turn it off.

Navigate to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Security Center

Once you’ve launched the security center,look at the left hand side of the window.

Look for the ‘Change the way security center alerts me’ under ‘Resources’ tab.

Click on it,it’ll open a new window[Alert Settings] which looks like the following:

Uncheck all the options to completely turn off the security center alerts.That’s all,You’re done.

Note:However,it is Always highly recommended to turn on your firewall/automatic updates and update your anti-virus program.

How to Delete/Remove Surabaya virus/worm/Spyware from your Computer?

Many people are facing problem with the new USB worms coming up,one such worm is Surabaya Virus[As it calls itself by that name!]

Some info: Surabaya is the second largest city in Indonesia,the name and language suggests that the worm was actually originated in Indonesia by some spammer.Ok,enough about it’s history,Let’s get into the details of the worm’s operation.

When the virus enters your system,the following message would come up:

“Surabaya in my birthday
Don't kill me, i'm just send message from your computer
Terima kasih telah menemaniku walaupun hanya sesaat, tapi bagiku sangat berarti
Maafkan jika kebahagiaan yang kuminta adalah teman sepanjang hidupku
Seharusnya aku mengerti bahwa keberadaanku bukanlah disisimu, hanyalah lamunan dalam sesal
Untuk kekasih yang tak kan pernah kumiliki 3r1k1m0”

And it creates a lot of ‘.SCR’ files and also changes Shell Extensions for all Drives(C,D,E,F,G,H..whatever).

So when you try to open any drive,or if you right-click on any drive you’ll be amazed to find “Test,Configure” instead of standard “Open/Explore”.

It also changes the registry to hide all the hidden folders and also disables ‘FOLDER OPTIONS’.

Let’s See How to Remove Surabaya virus

THE SOLUTION:

>>STEP1: Download free ClamWin Anti Virus, install, update then boot into safe mode [Press F8 during start up and select Safe mode Booting], disable any other antivirus software that you have, and perform
a full scan:

This is a Free Anti Virus which detects Surabaya. After deleting all the viruses by the antivirus perform the steps below.

Note: You can proceed to next step if you have already deleted the virus with any other anti-virus. It is not that only ClamWin anti virus must be used.

>>STEP2: Delete file ‘Autorun.inf’ which allows the malicious script to run automatically when you click/double click on the drive.

If you are not able to delete it from Windows Explorer,then you can try using ‘DOS Command Prompt’. To enter into this,

Go to Start Menu>Click on RUN>Type ‘cmd’ ,Click ‘OK’.

Now the command prompt will be opened up,

the default root will be ‘C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>’

You have to change it to ‘C:\’,to do that type ‘cd/’ and it’ll take you to ‘C:\’.

Now type attrib -s -h –r autorun.inf [And Hit ‘Enter’-This is to change attributes if the file so that we can delete it]

Now Type ‘del autorun.inf’

>>STEP3:The Second step is very important because you need to work with ‘Windows Registry’

Ok let’s start it:

Method 1 By Using Command Prompt:

Open a command prompt. Copy and paste the commands given below in your command prompt (To paste in command prompt right click in the black screen and select paste):

reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" /v LegalNoticeCaption /f

reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" /v LegalNoticeText /f

Method 2 By Using visual Windows Registry Editor:

As in the first step, go to Start>Click on RUN>type ‘REGEDIT’ and press ‘ok’.

[Note:’REGEDIT’ stands for Windows Registry Edit. If any error shows like: "Registry Editor Has Been Disabled by your Administrator" then You need to enable it. Visit the link Below: http://techrena.blogspot.com/2008/11/how-to-enable-registry-editor-regedit.html ]

Then Click on>“HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE”[Click onthe ‘+’ sign]

Then find ‘SOFTWARE’ and Again Click on the ‘+’ sign next to it.

Next Find ‘Microsoft’ under it and then ‘WINDOWS NT’

Next ‘CURRENT VERSION’ and finally find ‘WINLOGON’.

The path you’ve followed is

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows NT>CURRENTVERSION >WINLOGON

on the right windows (under data) modify or delete “LegalNoticeCaption” & “LegalNoticeText”.

This removes any message coming up in the start up.

>>STEP4: Visit the link below and enable your Show Hidden folder Options:

HP DELL TOSHIBA Recalls Sony batteries due to fire hazard

The U.S. government on Thursday (October 30, 2008) issued a recall of 35,000 Sony Corp notebook computer batteries, calling them a fire hazard to consumers.

The recall affects Sony lithium-ion batteries that were used mainly in computers from Hewlett-Packard Co, with a smaller number in notebooks from Dell and Incand Toshiba Corp .

The recall affects around 32,000 HP notebooks, 3,000 from Toshiba, and 150 Dell computers.

Sony blamed the faulty batteries on manufacturing line adjustments in 2004 and 2005, which it believes may have affected the quality of some cells. Other incidents of overheating may have involved a problem with raw materials.

It may be noted that last month the consumer electronics giant SONY recalled 438,000 of its Vaio laptops due to battery overheating concerns.

According to Reuters, there has been 19 reports of the batteries overheating, including 17 reports of fire with two people experiencing minor burns.

Sony spokeswoman Elizabeth Boukis told that the company will support the U.S. recall, along with that of an additional 65,000 batteries worldwide. On a global basis, PC makers have reported 40 overheating incidents.

Boukis said batteries covered by the new recall are unrelated to those in company's massive 2006 recall. That action covered 9.6 million batteries and cost the company millions.

Still an Ambiguity : Alliance of Google And Yahoo!

The prospects for a Web-advertising partnership between Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. have dimmed, with both sides considering walking away from the deal as early as next week, say people familiar with the matter.

The two companies met Thursday with the Justice Department, part of a series of meetings to address the concerns of regulators. While the parties may agree to continue the talks -- or they could reach a resolution -- there are signs they are unwilling to make compromises to address the Justice Department's objections.

Google spokesman Adam Kovacevich said his company continues to have "cooperative discussions with the Department of Justice about this arrangement." He added, "We are confident that the arrangement is beneficial to competition, but we are not going to discuss the details of the process."

Yahoo spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler said discussions with the Justice Department are "ongoing," adding, "we believe strongly that this agreement will strengthen Yahoo's competitive position."

The partnership, announced in June, would allow Yahoo to display search ads sold by Google and take a cut of the revenue. The alliance instantly drew criticism that it would give Google too much clout in online ads.

The option to scrap the deal has been on the table before, but Google in particular has begun considering it more seriously as Justice Department talks haven't progressed. One sticking point has been the department's discussion of having the companies sign a consent decree stating the terms of the partnership. That would subject their compliance to continuing oversight by a judge.

A withdrawal would be a big blow for the companies, Yahoo in particular. When the deal was announced, Yahoo rejected a separate search offer from Microsoft Corp. Yahoo hopes the Google deal would help it generate hundreds of millions of dollars in added revenue.

At the time, both sides said they would delay implementing the partnership to allow regulatory review. They later said they would implement the arrangement around early October regardless of whether regulators indicated they would seek to block it. But they haven't gone ahead.

By dropping out, Google would likely be seeking to avoid a legal battle that would spotlight its market power. For Yahoo, backing out would clear a path to pursue other alliances to help turn around its business. Yahoo has been in talks about combining with Time Warner Inc.'s AOL.

How to install your own Windows XP in HP Laptops

While installing Windows XP, if it tells "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" then this error happens because your computer has a storage controller that isn't supported natively in XP, usually a SATA controller. Especially in HP laptops without free DOS you cannot install other operating systems. Solving this problem is very simple. Just follow the steps below. This technique requires no software or downloads.

Step 1: Reboot your computer. While startup, before the Operating system starts, press the F10 key continuously until it shows the BIOS menu as shown below. If you have any start up password or administrator password then enter it. In the BIOS menu select the System Configuration tab.

Step 2: Now you can see the SATA Native Support option. It will be in the Enable Mode as default.

Step 3: Select the SATA Native Support option and press enter. You will see the enable or disable option.

Step 4: Now you select the disable option.

Step 5: After completing the entire task given above press F10. It will show a quit menu. Select yes and it will automatically reboot the system.

Now your computer is ready for the setup. Now you put your Windows CD/DVD in the Disk drive. it is important that you enable the Boot from ROM option and it is first in the boot order.

NB: This technique may work for other brands than HP also if the BIOS support the disable SATA native support option. This technique will not only allow you to install XP but also any other operating system of your need in any HP laptop.

Yesterday YouTube has rolled out this new feature known as ‘Deep Linking’ which allows users to start video from their desired point of time[provided the input time is within the length of the video].

Let’s see how we can use YouTube Deep Linking:

Look at the following YouTube video URL,and observe the time stamp ‘#t=1m25s’ that has been appended to the URL.

And If you try opening this in YouTube,you can see that this video starts buffering from 01:25[the time that we desired].

The one more good thing about this is if someone finds something is very interesting at a particular time stamp,they can post it in comments and YouTube will automatically adds Hyper Link to that so that when users click on that it stats from that time.

Well this may be not a big one but certainly makes life simpler.It took more than 2 years for YouTube to come up with this,when it’s owner Google had started this feature two years back in Google Videos.

How to get full screen for Turbo C++ 3.0 in Vista

This is a big question for those who are still using Turbo C++ Version 3.0 in Windows Vista. As everyone knows that full screen is not supported with the version 3.0 in Vista; it is ridiculous to work in the small screen where I think no one can ever imagine writing a program there! This solution will help all the C, C++ learners using TC++ 3.0 in Vista.

This is a simple technique. Just follow the simple 4 steps given below and get a big screen in few seconds. There is no need of any additional softwares or drivers.

Step 1: Open TC++ (normally C:\TC\BIN\TC.EXE). In the startup it will show a dialogue box that it doesn’t support full screen mode as seen in the picture below. Just select ignore option. Then it will open the small screen mode.

Step 2: Go to the top left of the window and click. It will show a menu as shown in the figure. Then select properties from the menu.

Step 3: Now it will show the properties window, in which you select the Font tab. There you can see two font options as Raster and Lucida Console. The default will be Raster. You select Lucida Console and select the size from the size list as 28.

Step 4: After selecting the fonts, now you have to select the layout tab where you can see screen buffer size, window size, and window position options. First unselect the “Let system position window” option from window position options. Now make the following changes:

Screen Buffer Size: Width: 82 Height: 28

Window Size: Width: 80 Height: 26

Window Position: Left: -4 Top: -4

After making the changes select OK.

Now you will see a larger window and very crisp font size in which you can work perfectly fine. This technique actually doesn’t provide full screen in Vista but you will find it much better.

NB: The given sizes will work fine for 1280 by 800 screens, but there is no compulsion that you have to use them as specified. You can always use your own options according to your need.
